About the event
Dear friends,
We are going to the concert as per the description below - feel free to join us!
In 2011, the TO ensemble quartet of Tze Toh (piano), Lazar T. Sebastine (Carnatic violin), Teo Boon Chye (tenor sax) and Dai Da (er hu) recorded the album Stories of Wonderland featuring the original fusion music of composer Tze Toh, and had their first ever concert at the NUS University Cultural Centre. Drawing from his influences Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ennio Morricone and Keith Jarrett, the album was a unique blend of jazz, film score, Indian music, classical music and Asian sounds, that celebrated the coming together of people, cultures and stories of life. The music was about composed lyrical melodies, cinematic textures as much it was about grooves, jazz, folk and contemporary improvisations.
Conceptualized and produced by Tze, the album was lauded by The Business Times as "sophisticated yet accessible", it was selected as one of the top 10 albums of the year that "helped shaped music". The album's main track An Indian Folk Song meets Jazz went on to win 1st prize in the UK Songwriting Contest's Instrumental Category. Since then, TO ensemble has evolved, and in its various forms from small ensemble to orchestra, performed in various concerts here and abroad.
Now for the first time in 11 years, the original quartet returns in concert, reimagining the works from their first album, featuring new arrangements and new works by music director / composer Tze Toh.
